Being a trustee is one of the most important roles in society. With the increasing involvement of the charity sector in providing public services, these organisations play a bigger part than ever in our everyday lives.
In an interview on BBC Radio 4 on the 26th January Bernard Jenkin MP, chair of the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee, commenting on the findings of his committee’s inquiry he said:
“The most important thing the charity trustees are responsible for is the reputation of their charity. Because without a reputation, it is nothing.
One of our recommendations is that the Charity Commission should give stronger leadership on what the responsibilty of charity trustees should be.
Why aren’t there courses like you have for directors of companies, approved by the Charity Commission, which particularly those responsible for larger charities should go on? Too often the charities choose trustees because they look good on headed paper, not necessarily because they are going to give the time and have the right attitudes to make sure a charity is properly governed.”
The sector deserves to have well trained and highly skilled trustees at the helm in exactly the same way directors in commercial orgainsations are expected to have on going professional development to ensure their efficacy.
This is why we launched the Trustee Academy, the first of its kind in the charity sector and the first to have ILM accredited courses with its flagship Advanced Trustee Programme for new and established trustees.Download Advanced Trustee Programme Course Overview
The Advanced Trustee Programme covers regulatory areas of responsibility comprehensively, but uniquely also ‘softer’ skills critical to maximising performance as a board member. These include organisational culture; strategy and impact; protecting personal and organisational reputation; diversity in the boardroom and how to work in a voluntary team for example – skills that have been identified as integral to helping both understand the role of a trustee and helping maximise performance as a board member.
The programme also includes an entire module dedicated to personal impact and individual learning delivered through peer to peer learning and coaching sessions; a learning innovation for trustees in the charity sector.
Spaces are filling up rapidly with the first module beginning on March 22nd, so be sure to download your copy of the overview below and get in touch to find out about enrolling.Download Advanced Trustee Programme Course Overview
